Dr. Dragana Martinovic, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education at the University of Windsor, along with Frank DiPietro, curriculum consultant to the Windsor Essex Country District School Board held the annual Windsor Essex Math Olympiad at the Faculty of Education on Saturday March 3, 2012. Students from grades seven and eight were challenged with 32 number problems including algebra, geometry, number and spatial sense, measurement and data management.
Of the 139 students, 24 were selected to continue on with training sessions at the Education Centre to prepare them for the upcoming Ontario Math Olympics. These students will face additional testing with only 8 continuing on to the provincial level.
Frank DiPietro of the WCDSB said “First of all, we know that just on a career-type level, math is indispensable. Why not have the kids realize that they can also find math interesting”.
The Windsor Essex Math Olympiad has been an annual fixture for almost two decades. This year’s event was sponsored jointly by the Faculty of Education, University of Windsor and The Windsor Essex Country District School Board.
