Whether a student's interest lies in taking just a course in English (say, in creative writing), or, rather, in majoring with English Honours, we offer a host of options and course types to select from at the undergraduate level.
To complete a degree in English, a student selects to register in one of nine available programs. Programs vary in length (three or four years) and in number of required and elective courses (depending on student interests).
Students can switch programs as they move through their degree (the department recommends consulting a faculty advisor when making such decisions).
First and second-year courses survey a literary period or theme, and introduce students to modes of critical thinking.
Third- and fourth-year courses present special topics (for example, the topic of rhetoric in Renaissance Literature) and a deeper and closer look at given subjects.
Students select courses according to categories of study. Categories include: Canadian Literature, American and World Literatures Written in English, Early and Later British Literature, Language and Theory, Creative Writing, among others.
The University has approved a new combined honours program in Digital Journalism and English. Any English major who is interested can register in either the Combined Honours Digital Journalism and English Language and Literature, or in the Combined Honours Digital Journalism and Creative Writing.
The DJ degree combines a full degree in English / Creative Writing with 16 courses in digital journalism theory and practice, including a suite of studio courses year by year. It combines hands-on professional training with training in critical thinking, perceptive reading, academic research, language, textuality, and media culture.
Graduates of this program will be qualified to proceed to any MA program either in English or in Journalism, or to choose from a range of professions, media-related or otherwise.
The program opens this fall with two required foundation courses, Journalism and Society (MW 8:30-9:50), and Reporting Fundamentals (F 8:30-11:20). Studio 1 (“The Job”) will be offered in the winter semester. The fall courses are now posted on the SIS. Enrolment is restricted to DJ students only.
The program is now open for application online and through a link on the DJ website. Requirements for admission are as follows: a minimum B+ average; submission of a piece of writing or video clip; an interview with DJ faculty to be scheduled in late June or July.
