LOCATION:KatzmanVanier Hall
DESCRIPTION:Voices of Today: Windsor High School Students Celebrate Freedom to Read Week. \n Voices of Today is a one-night celebration of freedom of expression \n coordinated by students from two Windsor high schools: Assumption College \n Catholic High School and Kennedy Collegiate Institute. On February 29\, 2012 \n at 6:00pm\, Katzman Lounge (located at the University of Windsor) will be \n transformed into a gallery of student work and a forum for discussion on an \n issue that is vital to our democracy. Voices of Today is held in conjunction \n with Freedom to Read Week (February 26 to March 3)\, an "annual event that \n encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to \n intellectual freedom\, which is guaranteed them under the Charter of Rights \n and Freedoms". Students will express their collective voices through creative \n writing\, visual art\, photography\, song writing\, multimedia performances\, \n spoken word\, and round-table discussions. The public is invited to speak with \n these students about their work and contribute to the ongoing conversations. \n Susan Holbrook\, a Windsor poet and English professor at the University of \n Windsor\, is the guest speaker of the evening. Voices of Today is a \n service-learning project developed by two teacher candidates at the \n University of Windsor. This initiative springs from their work in the LEAD \n program\, an innovative course offered to students in the Education \n Department. In its fourth year\, this program fosters student success among \n hundreds of Windsor youth each year through creative workshops\, inspirational \n speakers\, and skills-building events. "Our program is the only one of its \n kind in Ontario\," states Dr. Geri Salinitri\, the director of the LEAD program \n and a veteran teacher from several Windsor high schools. "We are dedicated to \n fostering resiliency and personal responsibility among all our students." \n Service-learning projects such as Voices of Today allow students to take \n direct ownership over their learning and directly engage with their community \n in a meaningful way. These students aren't merely learning about freedom of \n expression by reading a textbook or listening to a lecture\, they are putting \n this fundamental right into action by starting a public discussion. Students \n will develop practical skills and raise their self-esteem by planning and \n delivering an event. In addition to coordinating Voices of Today\, students \n contribute to an online gallery (freedom2readwindsor.wordpress.com)\, a blog \n designed to host student work and thoughts on freedom of expression. Members \n of the public are encouraged to share their thoughts and comment on this \n digital gallery. Students will post their writing\, artistic contributions\, \n and thoughts on freedom of expression in the days leading up to the event. \n These contributions\, along with any reflections on the evening\, will be \n collected in a report to serve as a record of this event. Voices of Today is \n one event among hundreds celebrating Freedom to Read Week in Canada. All \n residents of Windsor and the surrounding area are invited to visit Katzman \n Lounge at the University of Windsor on February 29 at 6:00pm and become part \n of a nation-wide discussion on freedom of expression.

DESCRIPTION:2011-2012 DISTINGUISHED SPEAKERS SERIES Dr. ALAN GALEY University of Toronto \n  “Ebooks in the Bibliographical Imagination: The Case of The \n Sentimentalists and the Giller Prize” In November 2010\, Johanna \n Skibsrud’s novel The Sentimentalists was announced as the winner of the \n Scotiabank Giller Prize\, which promptly embroiled the work\, its author\, and \n its publishers in a clash between different modes of book publishing. The \n novel’s publication as a limited-run book from a small press (Gaspereau)\, \n then as an ebook (Kobo)\, then as a mass-market paperback (Douglas & \n MacIntyre) sparked public interest in the kinds of questions usually asked by \n bibliographers. How do the published versions of The Sentimentalists differ \n in their print and digital forms? How do those different forms affect (and \n effect) meaning? With the 2010 Giller controversy\, the normally specialized \n subject matter of textual scholars and digital humanists became matters of \n debate in the mainstream media. This talk will explore the role of ebooks in \n the bibliographical imagination\, using The Sentimentalists as a case study \n that demands a synthesis of bibliography\, digital humanities\, and the history \n of the book.
