First-year Students: Special Programs

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences offers a trio of first-year special support programs centered on the course 01-01-120 Understanding the Contemporary World (UCW).

UCW is a double-weighted course which incorporates broader academic skills alongside the multidisciplinary course content. Lectures complement the text The Humanistic Tradition Book 6  to examine twentieth-century developments in disciplines such as art, literature, music, and philosophy, and explores how they influence popular culture and society. A customized readings book is used in tutorials to develop and reinforce study skills that will be applicable throughout your university studies.

  • The Gateway Program is aimed at students whose final high school averages are just below that required for routine admission
  • The Discovery Program is for students who are still considering their major subject area
  • Fresh Start provides an alternative to withdrawing from university for students with low grade point averages at the end of their first year.
