The Fresh Start program aims to establish and reinforce the skills needed for successful university study through controlled course choices, on-going academic advising, and a pre-study workshop, accompanied by strategies to improve student averages.
These students would normally be ‘Required to Withdraw’ from the University.
Students are normally Required to Withdraw after two semesters of poor academic achievement. This prevents students from incurring unnecessary debt, and encourages them to address problems impeding their studies.
The Fresh Start program provides an alternative to withdrawing from study by developing study skills and providing individual student monitoring and support through the multi-disciplinary course Investigating the Contemporary World. Repeating Foundations of Academic Writing ensures students have fulfilled a necessary requirement for graduation and that they have the writing skills to successfully complete other Arts and Social Sciences courses.
Repeating failed courses is also the fastest way to improve a student's grade point average as the first grade is removed from the student’s grade point average.
TESTIMONIALS
"The Fresh Start Program for me meant that I was able to prove not only to the school but to myself that I deserved to be here. It also instilled in me faith in the school system, as it allowed me to feel like I wasn't just another number. I feel like I came out of the Program a better student....I had to commit to achieve goals. The skills you learn as a Fresh Start student are so easy to carry with you throughout the remainder of your university career. " Jasmine Burke-Ishmael, Sociology
"I feel like a whole different student with new confidence and drive....I highly recommend Fresh Start to anyone who is struggling." Ashley White, 2nd year, Women's Studies
