Mentorship and Learning

Mentorship and Learning (01-01-400/02-02-400) is a course which runs each year in the Fall semester. To be successful in this course, students must begin to think like mentors and question how the role of the mentor in the context of this course will translate into practice. An open attitude and willingness to actively participate in small and large group interactive experiences is essential in building a good understanding of the mentor process. Students are introduced to learning theory, learning styles, group facilitation and effective leadership, critical thinking/reading and information literacy. This is combined with a practicum component in which student mentors will act as peer-learning facilitators in one of five courses within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. These courses are:

  • Past to Present: Understanding History (43-110)
  • Nature of Theatre (24-100)
  • Introduction to Canadian Government and Politics (45-100)
  • Understanding the Contemporary World (01-120)
  • Developmental Psychology: The Child (46-223)

Mentors are fully integrated into the courses and work closely with faculty to help students understand material covered in lectures and readings.

Interested in taking the course in Fall 2013?  We will begin to accept applications here in March 2013.
