Student Choice Initiative

Update

In January 2019, the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges & Universities announced the Student Choice Initiative. The Student Choice Initiative allowed students to choose which non-mandatory ancillary fees they would pay through an opt-out process.

In November 2019, Ontario's Divisional Court struck down the Student Choice Initiative.

“Requiring that universities allow students to opt out of student association fees and other ‘non-essential’ services is inconsistent with the universities’ autonomous governance,” the decision read in part.

Until further information is received, the University of Windsor has suspended the Student Choice Initiative opt-out.
