The University of Windsor is a great place to complete your undergraduate degree before you apply to medicine.  We have a variety of programs for you to choose from and enthusiastic professors who are acclaimed for their teaching ability.  Last year, 18 University of Windsor students were accepted to Ontario Medical Schools.  This was above the provincial average for all Ontario Universities. 

There are 6 medical schools in Ontario. Medical school is a program you apply to after you have an undergraduate degree.  Your undergraduate degree is the first 3 to 4 years of University you complete to receive a general (3-year) or honors (4-year) Bachelor’s degree.

What undergraduate degree should I take?

It depends on what medical school(s) you wish to apply to and what subject area you are interested in.  Check out the OMSAS 2008 Instruction booklet.

Take a look at the chart on page 9 of this document from the Ontario Medical school application service.  This page shows the academic and other requirements (like the MCAT – medical college admission test) for all 6 medical schools.  As you can see, you can complete an undergraduate degree in ANY DISCIPLINE.  A Bachelor of Science is one of the most common paths that students take but you do not have to take a Science degree to apply to medicine.  However, you must fulfill any prerequisites that the medical schools specify on this chart.

Common undergraduate degrees from the University of Windsor taken by students wanting to apply to Medicine:

Bachelor of Science (BSc) Biology
BSc Biology and Biotechnology
BSc Biochemistry
BSc Biochemistry and Biotechnology
BSc Behavior, Cognition and Neuroscience

This is the Ontario Student Assistance Program. Many university students use this system to apply for a student loan to help them pay for school.

Scholarships, Awards & Bursaries: 

The University of Windsor offers several automatic scholarships for applicants coming directly out of high school going into a 4-year Honors Bachelor’s degree program.

Average
75 - 100% If you plan to live in a University of Windsor-owned residence, you will receive a Renewable Residence Entrance Award of $4000 ($500 x 8 terms)

80 - 83.9% Renewable Entrance Scholarship of $4000 ($500 x 8 terms)
84 - 86.9% Renewable Entrance Scholarship of $6000 ($750 x 8 terms)
87 - 89.9% Renewable Entrance Scholarship of $8000 ($1000 x 8 terms)
90 - 93.9% Renewable Entrance Scholarship of $10000 ($1250 x 8 terms)
94 - 95.9% Renewable Entrance Scholarship of $12000 ($1500 x 8 terms)
96 - 97.9% Dean’s Renewable Entrance Scholarship of $14000 ($1750 x 8 terms)
98 - 100% President’s Renewable Entrance Scholarship of $16,000 ($2000 x 8 terms)
