Tuition Fee Refund Policy and Deadlines

Registration of students who are defending and/or depositing

All graduate students must register and pay appropriate fees until actual completion of all coursework AND research requirements for their degree.

Students will not be permitted to defend and/or deposit unless they are registered for the term in which they are defending and depositing.

Use the following to determine which term you need to be registered for:

If you defend or deposit within this period: May 1 to August 31
you must be registered in this term: Summer term

If you defend or deposit within this period: September 1 to December*
you must be registered in this term: Fall term

If you defend or deposit within this period: January 1 to April 30
you must be registered in this term: Winter term

*Note: The final day for deposits in December will be posted each year.

Tuition Refunds (Phase I and Phase II) - Eligibility 

Tuition refunds are available each term for graduate students who have completed all coursework and other program requirements in previous terms except for the final oral defense and/or deposit.  To be eligible for tuition refunds, students must be registered in the current term only in one of the following: a doctoral dissertation, Master's thesis, Master's major research paper, kinesiology sports internship, political science internship, or creative writing project (course number xx-798; xx- 797; xx- 796; xx-795 or xx-794).

Each term there are two tuition refund deadlines: 

Phase I (100% tuition refund)

What is the Phase I deadline?

  • students who complete all degree requirements by the Phase I deadline, including the final deposit of their dissertation/thesis/major paper document in the Graduate Studies office, will be eligible for 100% tuition refund for that term. 

Who is eligible for Phase I?

  • the student must have completed all coursework and other program requirements in previous terms, and must be registered only in the following: a dissertation, thesis, major paper, kinesiology sports internship, political science internship, or creative writing project (course number xx-798; xx- 797; xx- 796; xx-795 or xx-794)
  • the student must be registered for the current term, even if they expect to complete their deposit by the Phase I deadline for that term - see also term duration.
  • the student must also be registered in the previous term (e.g. to be eligible for Phase I tuition refund for Summer term 2018 term the student must also be registered in the Winter term 2018) in a dissertation, thesis, major paper, kinesiology sports internship, political science internship, or creative writing project (course number xx-798; xx- 797; xx- 796; xx-795 or xx-794)
  • as long as the student completes their deposit before the Phase I deadline, the tuition fees for that term will be waived. However, students who choose not to pay tuition fees but do not meet the Phase I deadline, will be charged tuition fees, plus any applicable interest.

Phase II (50% tuition refund)

What is the Phase II deadline?

  • students who complete all degree requirements by the Phase II deadline, including the final deposit of their dissertation/thesis/major paper document in the Graduate Studies office, will be eligible for 50% tuition refund for that term. 

Who is eligible for Phase II?

  • the student must have completed all coursework and other program requirements in previous terms, and must be registered for the current term only in the following: a dissertation, thesis, major paper, kinesiology sports internship, political science internship, or creative writing project (course number xx-798; xx- 797; xx- 796; xx-795 or xx-794).
  • the student must be registered for the current term
  • the student must also be registered in the previous term (e.g. to be eligible for Phase II tuition refund for Summer term 2018 the student must also be registered in Winter term 2018) in a dissertation, thesis, major paper, kinesiology sports internship, political science internship, or creative writing project (course number xx-798; xx- 797; xx- 796; xx-795 or xx-794)
  • if the student completes their deposit before the Phase II deadline, the base tuition fee for that term will be reduced by 50% (see also deposit details

Tuition refund deadlines for Fall Term 2018

Phase I: September 27, 2018

Last day for completion of all requirements for graduate degrees under Phase I for Fall term 2018. Students who complete all requirements, including deposit in the Office of Graduate Studies, for major papers, theses, and dissertations by Phase I are eligible for a 100% tuition refund for Fall term 2018, provided that the student was registered in the previous term (Summer 2018) and that all other requirements for the degree are already complete. The major paper, thesis, or dissertation grade will be assigned to the Summer term 2018.

Phase II: October 18, 2018

Last day for completion of all requirements for graduate degrees under Phase II for Fall term 2018. Students who have completed all requirements, including deposit in the Office of Graduate Studies, for major papers, theses, and dissertations by this date are eligible for a 50% base tuition refund for Fall term 2018, provided that the student was registered in the previous term (Summer 2018) and that all other requirements for the degree are already complete. The major paper, thesis, or dissertation grade will be assigned to the Fall term 2018.
