Opt-out

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE APPLYING TO OPT-OUT ONLINE

The GSS opt-out website link is for FULL-TIME GRADUATE STUDENTS ONLY and you DO NEED to opt-out every year, there is no carry over from the past year. If you are a part-time graduate student, you do not need to opt-out as you are not assessed the fee for the GSS drug/dental benefits plan. However, if you are an MSW student enrolled in the program off campus for working professionals, YOU DO NOT NEED TO OPT-OUT as you are not to be charged for the GSS drug/dental benefits plan. If you are a master’s level nursing student, please make sure to opt-out as one semester, your status is that of a full-time graduate student.  Please check with the Nursing dept. regarding this matter.  If you have opted-out during the fall 2011 semester, YOU DO NOT NEED TO OPT-OUT AGAIN IS OPT-OUT IS ONLY DONE ONCE PER YEAR DURING THE SEMESTER THAT YOU FIRST BEGAN FOR THE 2011/12 ACADEMIC YEAR. In order to be eligible to opt-out, here is the criteria:

  • You must have a comparable benefits plan to that of GSS.

  • If you only have OHIP or OHIP Equivalency (for International Students), you are not eligible as this is only health coverage and as such, does not cover you for prescriptions, vision, dental, OOP, etc.

  • If you only have the Trillium drug plan, you cannot opt-out or if you do, you will be declared ineligible as the GSS policy states that you must have a comparable benefits plan to that of the GSS and you will then be mandated to keep the GSS drug/dental benefits plan.

  • If you missed the opt-out deadline during the fall 2011 semester, you are not eligible to opt-out during the winter 2012 semester and your application will be disqualified.  What you may do is send the GSS an email addressed to the GSS Insurance Appeals Committee and include the name of the company that you are covered with, your coverage, subscriber number and policy number, your name and student number and why you missed the deadline during the fall 2011 semester.

If you are a part-time undergraduate student, please opt-out through the OPUS website.  If you opt-out through the GSS website, you will NOT receive your opt-out reimbursement as GSS does not receive your student fees and therefore, you will not be entitled to an opt-out refund from the GSS if you opt-out through this website.

If you are a full-time undergraduate student, please opt-out through the UWSA website.  This includes students enrolled in the one year teacher’s program as well as all students in law school.  If you opt-out through the GSS website, you will NOT receive your opt-out reimbursement as GSS does not receive your student fees and therefore, you will not be entitled to an opt-out refund from the GSS if you opt-out through this website.

The GSS opt-out link will be available beginning Monday, July 18, 2011 to midnight on Friday, September 30, 2011.

If you have any questions or need clarification regarding opting-out and where you should opt-out to avoid problems with your opt-out refunds, please send an email to sgpsea@uwindsor.ca or phone (519) 253-3000 Ext. 3915 so that we may direct you to the proper website or person.
