Congratulations 2011 Book Award Winners
Book awards honour exemplary high school student athletes
Tatiana Iorio will begin studies in kinesiology in September, but the Sandwich Secondary student can't wait until then to get to the University of Windsor. She has already begun training with the Lancer women's soccer team in preparation for the fall season.
"I filled out a recruiting form on the Lancer Web site, and the next day I got a call asking me to come out," says Iorio, one of 25 top local student athletes honoured Thursday at the Human Kinetics Book Awards reception. The awards recognize students who have maintained outstanding academic performance and have made exceptional contributions to their schools and communities through athletics, leadership and volunteer activities.
In Iorio's case, that has meant holding down a grade average of over 90 percent throughout her high school career, captaining her school's soccer and volleyball teams and playing on the senior basketball team, and volunteering as a volleyball coach and charity fundraiser.
She says her selection was flattering, but wasn't a factor in deciding to attend the University of Windsor: "I just heard that the kinesiology program here is the best."
