“Easternization of the Western World: Reverse Colonization”
Of all the major political and social developments since World War II, the movement of Eastern (non-European) people to the European world has been the most significant but it has received insufficient discussion in academia. This development is in stark contrast to what had happened in the three or four centuries preceding the post-colonial period when Europeans ‘migrated’ to farther corners of the world to populate, educate, evangelize, colonize and administer their newfound or captured territories. Now the pendulum has swung. It is the non-Europeans who are now mass migrating to European lands. Instead of Europe (i.e., the West) Westernizing the world, the West is being Easternized and globalized in its own image. In this talk, ‘Easternization of the Western world’, Dr. Sushil Jain will illustrate how the West is being Easternized not only by the growing number of people from the East on their soils but also how Eastern, Far Eastern and Middle Eastern ideas, fashions, foods, art, literature, dance, music, religions, sports, media and culture, in general, are taking a hold on Western soils and becoming mainstream.
A reception follows the lecture.
