New iFactory and iDesign Studio at the IMS Centre
-
The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) has awarded IMSC's Dr. Hoda ElMaraghy, Dr. Waguih ElMaraghy and Dr. Ahmed Azab $398,811 to support the development of an Innovation Design Studio and Transformable Manufacturing System, the first of its kind in North America. The systems will be housed in the university’s $112 million Centre for Engineering Innovation, scheduled to open for classes in the fall of 2012.
According to Dr. Hoda ElMaraghy, the new iDesign Studio and iFactory will allow users to experiment with the entire chain of innovation. Stating, “It’s an assembly system. It contains robotic assembly stations, inspection stations, automated retrieval and storage systems, and material handling systems. It allows us to not only make things within that factory, but to reconfigure its layout. So if the market needs change in six months, we can reconfigure the whole layout in one hour. Think about that."

The book titled “Changeable and Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems” discusses many key strategies for success in this environment. It presents the new concept of changeability as an umbrella framework that encompasses many paradigms such as agility, adaptability, flexibility and reconfigurability. It provides the definitions and classification of key terms in this new field and emphasizes the required physical/hard and logical/soft change enablers. Dr. Hoda is the Editor and author of 9 out of 22 Chapters in this book. The book is published by Springer-Verlag, ISBN: 978-1-84882-066-1.
