Becoming a Permanent Resident

Canada has different programs to allow international students to become Permanent Residents (PR), this is the first step to obtain citizenship. On this page, you will find links to the most commonly used pathways to PR for international students.

Express Entry

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses the Express Entry system to select new immigrants based on their skills, education, work experience, and ability to settle in Canada, etc. If you are interested in one of the following immigration programs, you can apply for Express Entry: 

If you meet the requirements of one of the above immigration programs, you can create your own online Express Entry profile (a free application). Once your profile is completed, you will be ranked in the Express Entry pool through Comprehensive Ranking System. Candidates with highest scores will receive invitations to apply for immigration under one of the above programs.

Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP)

The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) is designed to help the province of Ontario select new immigrants with the appropriate skills and experience to work and live in Ontario. The OINP will nominate the individuals who can contribute to Ontario's economy for permanent residence. The individuals will submit their own permanent residence application through one of the immigration programs through IRCC.
