Ali Karaki

A fourth-year Computer Science student, Ali Karaki has maintained a perfect 13.0 GPA over the last three years- the highest GPA among the University's international student population. Karaki was selected in his first year to work with computer science professor, Dr. Richard Frost and a group of students on a research paper. Then, following a co-op research team at Research In Motion, he was offered full-time work with the company beginning in September 2011.
Karaki says he admires this culture and country. "Being here has allowed me to be the person I want to be and dream big. I couldn't have gotten to this point of success if I were to do my undergraduate in my country."
Uwindsor offered the right program and a co-op option at reasonable fees for international students, he says, and the chance to talk with professors one-on-one.

A 16-month co-op placement as a software engineer with Research in Motion was an amazing experience, says Ali Karaki, who has contracted to return to the company for a full-time position after graduating from computer science this summer.

"I worked on tools and applications for the Blackberry," Karaki said. "It helped me to realize what I like and what I don't like."

Karaki received an award for most successful co-op placement, Friday at the Computer Science Awards reception. He was also recognized for the highest grades in the honours program and as a member of the honour roll.

He said it's nice to be acknowleged, but that he must share credit for his achievements.

"My accomplishments would not have happened without the professors," Karaki said. "My great strength is that I was not afraid to approach my professors for help. They were always very approachable."

Each of the honourees were presented with certificates of achievement and small gifts. Find event details and a full list of award recipients on the Web site of the School of Computer Science.
