Training Modules

Advanced Training in Office Suite Software

IT Leaders will receive specialized advanced training in the area of office productivity tools. As well as allowing IT Leaders to perform their position tasks more efficiently, this training will allow them to become technical experts in the area of office productivity tools.

PC Support & Security

IT Leaders will be trained in basic PC troubleshooting including the application of security patches to operating systems and would be able to configure a PC to take advantage of the automatic updates option for O/S patches. They will receive training with respect to the use of the University virus protection software. This training will emphasize the importance of security and illustrate some of the security issues in our environment.

End-User Best Practices

Related to the above, IT Leaders will be trained in best use practices for end-users (i.e., the importance of keeping O/S patches and virus signatures up to date) and will become living models by following the best practices and passing them on to the members of the respective area/department. Best practices would extend to other items used in technology such as the appropriate and inappropriate uses of e-mail.

Protecting Computer Information - Security Policy / True Crypt

This part of the training covers how to protect your computer information using TrueCrypt software. TrueCrypt (Open Source Volume Encryption Software) is a software system for establishing and maintaining an on-the-fly-encrypted volume (on a data storage device). On-the-fly encryption means that data is automatically encrypted or decrypted right before it is loaded or saved, without any user intervention.

File Management / LAN

IT Leaders will receive training in the basic concepts and features of Novell including file sharing, file management and network printing. IT Leaders will become knowledgeable of what information is required in the reporting of a network printing issue (i.e. network jacks) to have issues resolved in a more timely and efficient manner. They will also be able to provide advice to their area/department with respect to their network printing needs and have a clear understanding of the benefits of network printing.

Lotus Notes

IT Leaders will be provided with advanced training in the features of Lotus Notes, notably, Calendaring and Document Library Databases. IT Leaders will become knowledgeable in the specific application of and practicality of these features for use in their respective areas thus furthering the use of technology across campus with the result of the campus community working more efficiently with the technology available to them.

The Lotus Notes training will also include Configuring Your Sidebar. This part of the Notes training will assist users in configuring the applications in the Lotus Notes 8 - Sidebar. The sidebar provides constant access to your IBM® Lotus® Sametime® Contacts, Calendar, and Feed Reader. You can change which of these applications displays in your sidebar. Each of the panels includes navigation controls and a panel menu that you can use to manipulate the panel (including floating or removing the panel), as well as context commands for the application.

Supported Software

IT Leaders will become knowledgeable concerning software supported by IT Services and will be able to use this knowledge to support their respective area/department.

Services Offered by IT Services

IT Leaders will be educated in the services offered by IT Services, able to use this knowledge to resolve an IT issue that may occur within their respective area/department and able to direct a member of their area to the appropriate problem solving documentation.

IT Leaders will also be the designated first contact point from IT Services to their department for IT related issues.

IT Leaders will work with IT Services to identify problem areas that need to be addressed to the benefit of all users in the University community. They will also be able to advise IT Services of training requirements needed that are specific to their respective area/department.

IT Leaders will be early adopters of new technologies and may act as beta testers for the roll-out of new technologies and new versions of software.
