Microsoft Campus Agreement

The University of Windsor has signed a campus agreement with Microsoft Corporation to offer a wide variety of their software on campus. The agreement provides Microsoft software for all University owned PCs, including faculty/staff PCs, research labs and student labs. Additionally, the license allows faculty and staff to install Office software on one home PC for work-related use.

The agreement provides the University with the latest software upgrades as soon as they are available. Purchasing in bulk provides the University with a lower price than it would spend annually on the software and insures that all Microsoft software used on campus is fully licensed. Additionally, the "at home use" provided by the agreement will help faculty and staff use similar versions of software at home as they have in the office.

Home Use
Microsoft requires faculty and staff that are taking software home, to sign an agreement that they will install the software on only one PC and use the software for work-related use. Microsoft defines work-related use as 80% of the use of the software being for work purposes.

Software list
The University agreement with Microsoft falls under Microsoft Campus Agreement 3.0. This Campus Agreement provides the following software:
  • Microsoft Office Standard and Professional Editions - the latest Macintosh and Windows versions of Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Access, Publisher and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Microsoft Desktop Operating System Upgrades (ie. Windows XP) - this software is only available for departmental orders only. People cannot take this software for personal PC installations.
  • Visio
  • Visual Studio
  • Virtual PC for Macintosh
  • Microsoft Project
  • Front Page
  • Educational Interactive CDs  - the latest Office application step-by-step interactive lessons
Distribution
The software covered by the Campus Agreement will be made available to departments and for individual use via a number of distribution channels.
Departmental Use – Departments will be able to purchase copies of the disks for $5/disk. These copies will be exclusively for PCs within the department. Ordering copies via the Web is available through the University's Software Depot Web site located at uwindsor.ca/softwaredepot
Individual use – Clients can either order a copy of the Office and/or application CDs for their PC at home, or they can borrow them. Unfortunately it is not possible to order OS CDs for individual use. Ordering is available through the University's Software Depot Web site. Students may pay through the convenient "Put it on my student account" option. Faculty and staff must make payment at the Cashiers (detailed instructions are available on the Web site as indicated above). Faculty and staff who wish to borrow the CDs can do so through the library.
IT Services Support
IT Services offers installation support for all software, but the degree of support for the software varies with individual packages. For instance, full support is available for Word, Excel and Powerpoint, on the latest platform, but limited support is available for Access. Outlook Express is supported as an alternative e-mail client to Lotus Notes for faculty and staff and for students who use it for IMAP or POP3 to access the Student WebMail system. Limited support is available for the XP and Macintosh platforms. A complete list of IT Services supported software is available on the IT Services Supported Software Web site .
