University of Windsor's Campus Technology Day is an annual one-day conference devoted to sharing and celebrating the ways technology impacts and enhances learning, teaching, research and building community on campus. It is an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to gather together to listen, discuss, and exchange ideas about the use of technology on campus.

David Lorber

Consulting Director at Gartner, Inc.

Keynote Presentation: Information Technology as an Institutional Priority

Have you considered:

  • How does the pervasiveness of IT in our lives affect the delivery of education?
  • How can universities and colleges – and their IT organizations – adapt to the increasing use of technology?
  • How can we modify behavior to address the increasing importance of technology?
  • How has the relationship between university / college IT organizations and their stakeholders changed over the past few years?

David Lorber

David is the opening keynote speaker for CTD 2014.  He is a Director with Gartner Consulting based in its Toronto office.  David has 19 years of experience in the IT industry, and since joining Gartner in 2000 he has conducted projects in many of Gartner’s practice areas including IT Strategy, Technology and Application Selection, Enterprise Architecture, Application Portfolio Assessment, Project and Portfolio Management and Sourcing.

David received a bachelor of mathematics in computer science degree with honors from the University of Waterloo and an MBA from the York University Schulich School of Business.  He also holds a Certified Management Consultant (CMC) designation from the Canadian Association of Management Consultants.

Mr. Lorber has had clients in many industries, but since 2005 his focus has increasingly been on Higher Education.  Over the past few years he has delivered a variety of engagements to clients as diverse as:

  • Canadian Universities – McMaster University and Carleton University
  • Ivy League Universities – Dartmouth College and Yale University
  • Small Canadian college - Norquest College (less than 5,000 students)
  • One of the largest education institutions in the US – Miami Dade College (approximately 175,000 students at 8 campuses)
  • Large higher education systems – Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (34 colleges serving nearly 500,000 students annually) and Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (31 institutions serving more than 430,000 students annually)
  • For profit, on-line institutions – Laureate Education
  • Testing services – College Board and Prometric (for profit)

Information Technology as an Institutional Priority

While delivering engagements for these and other institutions, Mr. Lorber and his colleagues observed a number of important trends emerge.  For example:

  • Technology has become pervasive and commoditized.
  • Universities and colleges (and other non-higher education institutions) are losing control of technology and its use.
  • The use of IT organizations by faculty and administrators has been changing – as has their relationships.
  • Stakeholders are increasingly acknowledging the strategic importance of technology in higher education – but that perspective is rarely seen reflected in their behavior.

As technology has evolved, the role of IT in higher education has also evolved – from a supporting service to a strategic service.  IT has become an integral part of not just higher education institutions, but most large organizations and people’s lives in general.  During his presentation, Mr. Lorber will highlight a number of questions that arise once IT trends in higher education are identified, and discuss options for addressing them.
