Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Service Description

Background

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) ensures secure data transmission from everywhere.

Certain University computer systems are not accessible from the Internet and can only be accessed from PCs connected to the University network. IT Services has implemented a Virtual Private Network (VPN) system to provide secure remote access to campus.  The VPN configuration makes it seem as if the user's PC is on the campus network by setting up a tunnel which encrypts all traffic between the remote user's PC and the University network, securing the data sent between the two. Using VPN provides access to Novell, Forte applications, FTP and other services that are currently blocked from the Internet.

The VPN client available on the Software Depot comes pre-configured for the UWindsor VPN service.  In order to authenticate to the VPN service, users will need to know their UWinID and password.

This client is for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista (32 & 64bit), Windows 7 (32 & 64bit).  The client is also available for Linux as a separate download from the vendor site and an OS X client is coming in the future.

Who Can Use This Service

The client software is available to anyone with a UWin ID.
