Turning on Operating System Automatic Updates
In order to protect yourself from having your PC become a victim of a virus attack, it is important that you keep both your operating system and virus protection software up to date.
Operating System Updates
Windows XP and Windows 7 come with an automatic update feature – this feature will check the Windows Update site for new updates periodically and install them for you.
IT Services recommends that you choose the automatic without notification option to keep your system up to date.
Windows XP
To use Automatic Updates to download and install any future critical security updates from Microsoft:
1. Click Start, and then Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click the System icon and then click on the Automatic Updates tab.
3. On the Automatic Updates window, check the box next to Keep my computer up to date..
4. Choose a setting. We strongly recommend choosing Automatically download the updates and install them on the schedule that I specify.
5. For the scheduled time, choose Everyday and a time that you know that your computer will be on and connected to the Internet (i.e. Select Everyday and 9:00 am). Click Apply and then OK.
Windows 7
To use Automatic Updates to download and install any future critical security updates from Microsoft:
1. Click Start, and then Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click the System icon and then click on the Windows Updates tab.
3. On the Automatic Updates window, click on the Change Settings link on the left side.
4. Choose a setting. We strongly recommend choosing Install Updates Automatically.
5. For the scheduled time, choose Everyday and a time that you know that your computer will be on and connected to the Internet (i.e. Select Everyday and 9:00 am). Click OK.
