Software Tips
Are updated drivers for your network adapter installed?
- Check the Drivers & Support section of your card vendor's website for frequent driver updates
Ensure that your card's driver settings are configured for optimal performance on UWin Wireless.
Is the UWindsor SSID configured as the preferred network in the wireless network settings?
Is the wireless adapter configured for Infrastructure mode?
Is there third party software enabled that could be impacting connectivity? Please correctly configure your security software to avoid interference with UWin Wireless features such as website redirection (for the portal login).
- For example, Norton Internet Security has been known to block the redirection to the portal website in the past. Please ensure you correctly configure your security software to not interfere with such functions. You may need to consult the software vendor's manuals to find these settings.
Wireless Interference
- Turn off any other wireless devices in the 2.4 GHz and 5.4-8 GHz spectrum. This includes cordless phones, gaming devices, and non university owned wireless access points.
- Improperly or autoconfigured bluetooth devices can generate wireless interference. Turn off all these devices while troubleshooting.
- Microwave ovens also generate wireless interference and should be kept clear of both the PC and Access Point (AP).
Barriers
- Ensure that the antenna is straight up and down.
- Different types of objects can become barriers to the wireless signals. Avoid placing items between your PC and the Access Point (AP), such as water coolers or bottles, refrigerators, dense boxes and shelving units.
- Mirrors inline between your PC and the Access Point (AP) can block signals as well.
- Ensure that the signal does not try to pass through a person as our bodies block wireless signals.
- Ensure nothing is in physical contact with the antenna.
Note: Normally, you will connect with the signal from the closest AP. In some circumstances the closest AP may not be on the same floor as you. You may need to relocate your PC in your room to connect to a stronger, more reliable signal.
Advanced Connectivity Issues
- The PC may just be in an area of poor coverage or it may have been automatically or manually disabled from connecting to the network for technical or other reasons. If you have checked all of the above items and still experience difficulties please contact the HelpDesk at extension 4440.
