Wireless Acceptable Use Guidelines

 

UWin Wireless Acceptable Use Guidelines
 
Users of the UWin Wireless network are bound by the University of Windsor’s Policies and Guidelines concerning the use of electronic resources. 
 
Users are responsible for all traffic passing through their computer regardless of:
  • whether or not they generated it
  • whether or not they know what they are doing
  • whether or not they realize that they have violated any specific policies

Unacceptable use of the UWin Wireless network includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Uses that violate federal or provincial laws, or university bylaws and policies such as those concerning information confidentiality.
  • Any uses that unduly interfere with the work of others or with the work of host systems. This includes, but is not limited to: unauthorized use of a computer ID or password; seeking information about or attempting to modify the University's computer security system; and knowingly propagating computer viruses or electronic chain letters.
  • Running interfering Wireless Access Points that clog the existing channels.
  • Providing a competing wireless internet service.
  • Creating an Ad-Hoc network or interfering AP that broadcasts the Uwindsor SSID.
  • Unauthorized copying of proprietary software, publications or files.
  • Uses of commercial software that in any way violate the applicable licensing agreement.
  • Uses related to commercial activities including, but not limited to, distribution of advertising material, offering network information or services for sale or personal gain, and private enterprises.
  • Computer information that portrays either men or women or their body parts in a pornographic or derogatory manner.
Denial of Service Policy
 
If you are not running an accepted virus scanner with all available virus definitions and active firewall, as well as all available critical Windows updates, you may be restricted to only accessing quarantined sites so you can fix the problem. Access to the wireless network is subject to being blocked by an Administrator at any time it is felt necessary, with no prior consent or notification. Reasons for being blocked include, but are not limited to, the following:
 
  • Presence or threat of a virus or mal-ware
  • Failure to comply with all software requirements outlined herein
  • Failure to comply with Acceptable Use outlined herein, and in the University of Windsor’s general Policies and Guidelines.
 
Further action may be taken based on the seriousness of the infraction.
