Brown celebrates 30th anniversary of treatise

Retired Windsor Law Professor, Raymond Brown, is celebrating the 30th anniversary of his 11-volume treatise: Brown on Defamation: Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, United States.

Brown was one of the first professors to teach at the law school during its inaugural year in 1968 and is well known for his work in launching Windsor Law’s legal writing and moot programs.

During his sabbatical in 1976, he began compiling what would become one of the most comprehensive legal texts on defamation law. By 1987, he published the first edition, a two-volume text called The Law of Defamation in Canada.

By the time Brown retired in 1999, the text consisted of 3 volumes.

Since his retirement from teaching, Brown has expanded the treatise by an additional 8 volumes and added material from countries other than Canada, particularly the United States.

Now in its 30th year, Brown’s treatise has been referred to, quoted, or cited as authority in over 800 judicial decisions, including the highest courts of Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong, and was cited in every defamation case decided by the Supreme Court of Canada.

Brown hopes to publish one more volume and then pass the baton to someone younger and more vigorous.

Please join us in congratulating Professor Brown on this significant milestone.
