Biography

Leonard Rotman joined the Faculty of Law, University of Windsor in 1998 following two years at the Faculty of Law, University of Alberta. He has been a full Professor since 2001, becoming one of the youngest ever appointed to that rank at the university.

Prof. Rotman’s scholarship covers both public and private law areas. He has published 5 books (3 in multiple editions) and over 90 book chapters, essays and articles addressing substantive issues in Aboriginal Law, Constitutional Law, Corporate Law and Governance, Equity, Fiduciary Law, Legal History, Remedies, Trusts, Unincorporated Associations, and Unjust Enrichment/Restitution. His book Fiduciary Law (Thomson/Carswell, 2005) was shortlisted for the 2007 Walter Owen Book Prize as the best new book in Canadian law and his work has been cited by domestic and international commissions and courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada.

Prof. Rotman has been invited to present papers at law schools and conferences in Canada, the United States, Australia, England, France, Israel and New Zealand, including the American Association of Law Schools (AALS) Annual Meeting, the International Association of Legal Methodology, Boston College Law School, Boston University School of Law, Duke University School of Law, Faculté de Droit, Université de Aix-Marseille III, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, T.C. Beirne School of Law, University of Queensland and the University of Auckland.

In addition to teaching at Windsor Law, Prof. Rotman has been invited to serve as a visiting professor at the Washington and Lee University School of Law in Lexington, VA and the Denver University Sturm College of Law in Denver, CO. He is the inaugural Visiting Scholar at the Hennick Centre for Business and Law at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University for the 2010-11 academic year. He was also named a Visiting Scholar at the Center for the Study of Law and Society at the University of California Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law and awarded a T.C. Beirne Distinguished Visiting Fellowship at the T.C. Beirne School of Law, University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia for 2010.

Dr. Rotman is author of the seminal works Fiduciary Law, (Thomson, 2005), shortlisted for the 2007 Walter Owen Book Prize as the best new book in Canadian law and Parallel Paths: Fiduciary Doctrine and the Crown-Native Relationship in Canada, (University of Toronto Press, 1996). He is author and editor-in-chief of Constitutional Law: Cases, Commentary and Principles, (Thomson, 2008) (with Bruce Elman and Gerald Gall, O.C.), author/editor of Canadian Corporate Law: Cases, Materials & Commentary, 4th ed., (LexisNexis, 2010) (with Bruce Welling and Lionel Smith) and author/editor of Aboriginal Legal Issues: Cases, Materials & Commentary, 3rd ed., (LexisNexis, 2007) (with John Borrows).

ARTICLES/CHAPTERS/ESSAYS:

Dr. Rotman's publications address various substantive issues in Aboriginal Law, Constitutional Law, Corporate Law and Governance, Equity, Fiduciary Law, Remedies, Trusts, Unincorporated Associations and Unjust Enrichment/Restitution. His work has been regularly cited by domestic and international courts and commissions, including the Supreme Court of Canada. He is frequently invited to serve as a peer reviewer and commentator for Canadian and International book publishers,  law journals, government granting agencies, royal commissions, universities and television, radio and print media.

TEACHING:

Dr. Rotman currently teaches from among courses in Business Associations, Comparative Corporate Law, Comparative Corporate Theory and Governance, Constitutional Law and Fiduciary Law. He has also taught courses in Aboriginal Law, Corporate Law, Law of Aboriginal Treaties, Securities Regulation and Trust Law.
