About 30 Windsor Law students under the leadership of professors Anneke Smit and Patrícia Galvão Ferreira participated in a nationwide research-a-thon on municipalities and climate change Monday, Nov. 18.
The national event, timed to coincide with the Global Law Clinics Day of Action on Climate Change, was organized by the student-led Cities and Climate Action Forum at Windsor Law and Osgoode Hall Law School’s Environmental Justice and Sustainability Law Clinic at York University.
Each university team faced a specific set of questions developed by law students with input from Dianne Saxe, Ontario’s former environment commissioner, and environmental law specialist David Estrin, as well as civic administrators from Toronto and Windsor.
At its meeting Monday, Windsor city council unanimously agreed to declare a climate change emergency after hearing from delegations that included a presentation by law students Adrian Halpert and Sharath Voleti. Windsor joins more than 400 communities across Canada with its declaration.
