Justin Smith, Peter Valente, Amanda Iarusso and Sean Reginio competed against the University of Toronto, Osgoode and McGill in the fourth annual Winkler Class Action Moot Competition in Toronto on February 25, 2017. All four team members performed extremely well and received many compliments from judges, comprised of practitioners from both the plaintiff and defence class action bar, and in house counsel.

In the final round, Amanda and Peter competed against a team from Osgoode before a panel of judges comprised of retired Chief Justice Warren Winkler, Ontario Court of Appeal Judge Pardu, and Superior Court Justice Perell. Amanda and Peter ultimately won the finals to bring the trophy back to Windsor Law. It is the second time in three years that Windsor has won.

Amanda also garnered the second place Oralist Award.

Prof. Kalajdzic coached the team for four months. “I am very proud of their hard work, and grateful for the support of alumni and other lawyers from Sutts, Strosberg, Siskinds, Koskie Minsky and BLG for judging practice rounds. As Justice Perell noted in his remarks to the competitors, mooting is a skills-based course that takes great commitment and time, but which gives students the opportunity to learn important advocacy and substantive legal tools. All four members of my team are well on their way to becoming great advocates.”
