Program Note:

composer and UWindsor alumna Shelley Marwood, BMus '04Elements by Shelley Marwood

The piece, Elements is based on a poem of the same name by Ruby Mulcaster (Marwood), my paternal grandmother. Having been born into a farming family in the early twentieth century, Ruby was unable to pursue a formal education past the age of fourteen. From that time forward her personal studies were focused on the Bible and her poetry. She had a strong belief in God throughout her life, and much of her poetry reflects this faith.

Although her poem "Elements" does not have an obvious religious tone like many of her other works, it portrays the awe Ruby felt when she observed the wonder of God's creation; I believe the wind also refers to the Holy Spirit.

This piece is dedicated to my mother and father.

"Elements" by Ruby Mulcaster (1908 - 2001)

Blow wind,
Blow from the north or south,
Blow strong,
Though dark the river's mouth.
Seep from the shore and roll the deep,
And o'er the land; no loitering sleep
Must check thy speed, for thou art free;
Sweep on till comes eternity.
Blow storms, if storms thy pleasure be
When mighty clouds are swept by thee,
Seep far the heat and drought and calm,
And let me feel thy soothing balm;
When sweeps thy breath upon my cheek,
Thy force drives on; my soul shall seek
To dwell with thee and be content,
To mingle with the elements.
