Elements by Shelley MarwoodShelley Marwood is an emerging composer currently based in Toronto, Ontario. She has had works performed across Canada and in the U.S., by ensembles such as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Windsor Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal, Rubbing Stone Ensemble, and the UCalgary String Quartet. Recent commissions include works for Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (Olympic Commissioning Project 2010), Windsor Symphony Orchestra (Windsor Canadian Music Festival 2009), New Works Calgary (Happening Festival 2009), and the Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble in 2011.
Shelley received first prize in the 2008 CMC Prairie Region Emerging Composers’ Competition for her piece “Illumination,” which was performed by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra at their New Music Festival in February 2008. In 2006 she was a finalist in the Land’s End Composers’ Competition for her piece “Piano Trio No.1”. She also received several academic awards for composition throughout her university career.
Born in Petrolia, Ontario in 1980, Shelley began her musical training with piano lessons at the age of five. She later received her Bachelor of Music (piano) from the University of Windsor in 2004, her A.R.C.T. (piano) from the Royal Conservatory of Music in 2004, and her Master of Music (composition) from the University of Calgary in 2010. She is currently in the DMA program in composition at the University of Toronto. Her composition mentors have included Jens Hanson, Brent Lee, Allan Bell, David Eagle, and Gary Kulesha.
