Flute instructor Ms. Jaimie WagnerMs. Jaimie Wagner, Special Instructor, Flute

 Jaimie Wagner decided to become a professional flute player at the age of 12 when she was invited to go on tour with James Galway and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performing John Corigliano’s Pied Piper Fantasy. She received her BM in flute performance from Ithaca College, NY, in 1998 and her MM from the University of Michigan in 2000. Her teachers include Jeffery Zook, Sharon Sparrow, Mark Sparks, Claudia Anderson, and Wendy Mehne. She has performed in master classes for many celebrated flutists including James Galway, Trevor Wye, Julius Baker, and William Bennett.

Ms. Wagner performed as soloist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in 1994 and in 1997 performed in many venues throughout Europe including the Royal Academy of Music in London, England. She was a finalist in the Frank Bowen Competition in Albuquerque, NM in 2000 and was an associate member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago in 2002. Ms. Wagner is now a freelance musician in the Detroit area and is on the substitute list for several local orchestras including the Michigan Opera Theatre.

She has performed with the Fischer Theatre Orchestra in Detroit, the Detroit Chamber Winds, and performs on the newly recorded series of “The Unrecorded Music of Paul Paray” with the Assumption Grotto Church. She is a highly sought-after teacher and her students have been accepted at prestigious music schools such as the New England Conservatory of Music, McGill University, and the University of Michigan. During the summers, she teaches at Signature Music Camp in New York and is the assistant teacher at Jeffery Zook’s Applewood Flute Retreat on the Bruce Peninsula.

Ms. Wagner currently teaches at Hillsdale College and at the University of Windsor.

 

flutist Liesel DeppeLiesel Deppe, Special Instructor, Flute

Liesel Deppe was born in South Africa, where she also completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Kwazulu-Natal. A scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service enabled her to further her studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich, Germany where she obtained a Meisterklassendiplom. Upon the completion of her diploma in Germany, Ms. Deppe moved to the United States to obtain a masters degree. She spent one year with Alexa Still at the University of Colorado in Boulder, before moving to Canada where she obtained her M.Mus. degree from the University of Western Ontario. Ms. Deppe is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Toronto where she has studied with Leslie Newman. Ms. Deppe has played with various ensembles and orchestras in South Africa, Europe, the United States and Canada. A highlight of her career was playing and touring with the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra in Europe and Israel. In the USA she was a member of the Central City Opera Company and the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra, while also playing as a substitute with the Colorado Springs Orchestra. In 2002 and 2003 Ms Deppe was a Member of the National Academy Orchestra with whom she also performed as a soloist. She has been a member of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra since December 2003, where she particularly enjoys playing the piccolo. She is also a substitute musician for Orchestra London, the Hamilton Philharmonic and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. During the 2006-2007 season Ms. Deppe was awarded a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, which enabled her to study with various flutists in the United Kingdom and Europe.

 

Clarinet instructor Mr. Trevor PittmanTrevor Pittman, Special Instructor, Clarinet
Concert Producer/Operations Manager

Born and raised in Lethbridge, Alberta, Trevor studied clarinet at the University of Lethbridge with Margaret Mezei.  He graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Music and the School of Fine Arts Gold Medal.  Trevor then received the U.S./Canada Fulbright scholarship to pursue study at the Master’s level at Eastern Michigan University, where he studied with Dr. Kimberly Cole.  He completed his Master’s in clarinet performance in 1999, and taught theory and literature as a Lecturer at the university until 2004.

Trevor now lives in Windsor, Ontario, where he teaches clarinet for the University of Windsor.  He is a regular substitute with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra and has played with many orchestras throughout Windsor and Michigan.  In addition to his orchestral playing, Trevor has performed in solo and concerto concerts in both the United States and Canada.  Trevor takes an active interest in new music, performing in the Windsor Canadian Music Festival for several years.  He currently is a member of the Noiseborder ensemble and examples of their work can be found at http://www.noiseborder.org. He is also a member of the woodwind quintet, The Essex Winds, and is working on a new recording project with the group.  Trevor currently works as the Concert Producer/Operations Manager for the School of Music at the University of Windsor.

Bassoonist Dr. Eric VarnerDr. Eric Varner, Special Instructor, Bassoon

Dr. Eric Varner is Currently the principal bassoon in the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, a position that he has held since 2004. In 2010, he gave four performances of Stamitz's Concerto In F-Major, and also performed Elgar's "Romance" as well as Fucik's "Stary Brucon" with the Windsor Community Orchestra. In 2005, he also was the winner of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra Solo Contest, and played on their Juno-nominated CD, "Last-Minute Lulu".
 
Varner has held various teaching positions, including professor of bassoon at Miami University from 2007-2009, and at Heidelberg University in 2006 and 2010-2011.
 
Varner has also held positions with The Michigan Opera Theater in Detroit (2004-2008), as well as with the Ann Arbor Symphony (2001-2006). He has performed with numerous other orchestras including the Detroit Symphony, the Dayton Philharmonic, the Bellingham Festival Orchestra, the Sarasota Opera, the Toledo Symphony, and the Dayton Opera. From 1996-2000 he performed with the Mannheim Chamber Orchestra in Germany, as well as the Heidelberg Cantata Orchestra.
 
He has participated in numerous festivals, including the National Repertory Orchestra, the Bayreuth Easter Festival, the Music Academy of the West, the Michigan City Chamber Music Festival, and the Glickman-Popkin Bassoon Camp. He also spent fourteen summers at the Interlochen Arts Camp, when he was the Assistant Director of the High School Boys Division.
 
Varner received a Doctor of Musical Arts (2004) degree from the University of Michigan, where he also obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in 1996 and a Master of Music in 2002. Additionally, he holds a degree in Artistic Education (1998) from the Mannheim Conservatory in Germany. His principal teachers include Richard Beene, Alfred Rindespacher, Hugh Cooper, and Michael Dicker.
 
An Active chamber musician and soloist, Varner has appeared throughout Europe, the United States, and Canada with various ensembles. Recent appearances include recitals and master classes at The University of Houston, Steven Austin University, Penn State University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. With the PEN Trio, Varner has performed at venues across the United States, including Kansas City, Columbia, the University of Nebraska, Truman State University,
and Kansas State University. In the fall of 2011, the PEN Trio will perform at the University of Michigan, Bowling Green State University, Western Michigan University, as well as at the Annual Conference of the College Music Society in Richmond, Virginia.
 
When he is not busy playing and teaching, Dr. Varner enjoys reading, watching college football, and playing with his dogs, Oscar and Lulu.
