Independence/Adjusting to living on their own

Advice for Parents of Students Living at Home

  • If your student is not leaving home, you will need to consider the unique needs of your commuting student so that you may continue to provide a supportive environment. As your student adjusts to university life, you may also notice some changes in your relationship with your son/daughter
  • Allow your student greater freedom. Consider that the family schedule will probably change and accept the fact that your student will not always be home for dinner or family functions
  • Encourage your commuting student to get involved in extra-curricular activities and develop connections to his/her campus community
  • Realize that your student's workload will increase dramatically and some family responsibilities may need to be adjusted
  • Understand that commuting to campus is time-consuming and frustrating
