Meet Your Orientation Leaders!

Alesia Campbell

What do you like about being an orientation leader?

There are many things that I like about being an orientation leader, and I believe that two of those reasons would have to be that I get to meet new people and help them become more familiar with the UWin campus.  Although being a Student Orienting Students’ ambassador is one of the aspects about being an orientation leader, I feel as though you are able to be yourself and have fun.  As an orientation leader, you not only learn more about your University, but you also learn more about yourself and how you are able to work as a team to accomplish many tasks.  I found that as an orientation leader you are able to value the difference in the people you work with, and work on your leadership.  Overall, I enjoy all aspects of being an orientation leader.

One of my most memorable orientation experiences was waking up early in order to get on campus by 7:30AM for Residence move-In Day.  During Head Start 2011, I had been a part of many student sessions, and one of those students from my session, and that I had given a tour to recognized me and came over to say hi.  I felt as though I was able to make a positive impact in that student’s University career because they told me that she (and her mother) felt comfortable with the University.

I love getting to know everyone that is a part of SOS.  We are really a great group of people and being an orientation leader has given me the opportunity to meet people I may never have.  Being a part of a team on SOS allows you so many opportunities to plan and decide things for Head Start and other events that run at the University; and getting to be a part of those decisions is a great thing.

One thing I will never forget about orientation was my very first meeting where SOS welcomed all of the year’s recruits.  It was so nice to meet all of the people at my table and it really set the tone that this was going to be a great group to be a part of.  Everyone was so friendly and fun which was very welcoming.

What do you like about being an orientation leader?

Being an orientation leader was one of the most exciting volunteer experiences in my life. I knew it was something I had always wanted to do when I was in first year. The orientation leaders had helped me transfer from high school to university with ease. Usually student clubs are concentrated within a field of study. One advantage of being an orientation leader is the opportunity to meet awesome people outside of my faculty with whom I got to share my vast university experiences. I also liked sharing my first-year experiences with new students. I enjoyed being a role model to others and provide support and information to everyone. The purpose of this experience is not only to teach others about various campus services but from my experience it also taught me some really helpful services that this university has to offer!

My most memorable experience during orientation was having the opportunity to meet with new students in September. Students who attended Head Start had recognized me during orientation and were kind enough to greet me. Other students had taken the time to e-mail me over the summer asking questions. I felt proud that I was able to answer their questions. My relationship with the students had made my volunteer experience even more fulfilling. I can’t wait to do it all over again next year!
