Advice for Students: How to Have a Successful Academic Appointment
- Treat your Academic Appointment as a regular job and allocate for it approximately 10 hours per week.
- Establish an initial contact with your supervising Faculty and learn about the project on which you will be working during the year and complete your contract. Your supervisor should briefly describe your project and he/she and you both sign your contract.
- You might be working in a team with senior students and your supervisor might assign a graduate student to oversee your work.
- Set up regular weekly meetings with your supervisor and schedule them in your planner.
- Keep a journal of your work and show it to your supervisor at every meeting.
- At the meetings report your progress and ask for advice and directions
- If you are working in the office or a lab, sign the attendance sheet
- If you are doing research in the library, make sure that your supervisor knows where you are.
- Report any difficulty to the Faculty member.
- If you need an additional assistance, contact the Co-ordinator of the Outstanding Scholar Program.
