Advice to Faculty Members Supervising Academic Appointees
- Having an Outstanding Scholar working for you is a great opportunity for you to share your passion for your discipline with a talented and motivated student.
- Scholar’s help might be very valuable in helping you in your research.
- Even the second year Scholars can meet the challenge of academic work at a higher level. Actually, they need to be challenged to acquire higher level of knowledge.
- Your Appointee will view you as his/her academic mentor.
- Your student is supposed to spend approximately 10 hours per week on the project.
- To help students to meet their commitments provide them with some structure and tools to be accountable for their work:
- Have short but regular meetings with your appointees. Once a week would be an ideal frequency for such a meetings.
- If your Scholar is reporting to your graduate student, be sure that both parties review the Scholar’s progress. Ask the Scholar to keep a journal of his/her work
- Ask your appointee to sing an attendance sheet either with you or the senior supervising student.
- If the student fails to meet his/her obligations, request an urgent meeting to discuss the issues and corrective measures to be undertaken by the student.
- If the above fails, please contact as soon as possible the Co-ordinator of the Outstanding Scholars program
