Get the perspective from those who are currently living the experience of being the parent of a first year student. See what these parents are going through as their students make the transition to university life. How does the first year experience affect the lives of parents and other family members. How can parents be supportive while still helping their students to establish a comfortable level of independence.
My name is Maureen and I have lived in Windsor all my life. I have 5 children and 6 grandchildren. Nicole is my youngest and about to experience the Nursing Program at the U of W. She is the first in the family to go to university directly from high school. Six years ago I suddenly and unexpectedly found myself single after 30+ years of marriage. So, one might say that I've looked at life from both sides now. (Psst: The current view is great!)
I'm a Toronto-area journalist and mother of three teenagers, the eldest of whom has just flown the nest (if you want to call this agonizing process "flying". I'm not so sure yet.) I also recently wrote a book called "Good to Go: A Practical Guide to Adulthood". Now if only I could get my own kids to read it! I guess we'll have to make do with trial and error, which I'll share with you during this sure-to-be-tumultuous first year at UWindsor.
