The Black Law Students' Association of Canada, Windsor chapter is pleased to collaborate with the University of Windsorts Pre-Law Students' Society and Undergraduate Mock Trial Association, to present the first Lloyd Dean Moot (The Dean)- a Windsor Law Undergraduate Moot Competition. The Lloyd Dean Moot is a free entry-level oral advocacy competition for undergrad students interested in law. The tournament will be held on Saturday, March 7th, 2020 at the University of Windsor, Faculty of Law in Windsor, Ontario (time TBD).
About Lloyd Dean
The Lloyd Dean Moot is named after the Honorable Justice Lloyd Dean, who presides at the Ontario Court of Justice in the West- Region-Essex County. After completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Windsor, Justice Dean went from playing football to going to law school at Windsor Law. Before becoming a judge, Justice Dean was a full-time prosecutor. Justice Dean thrived in the courtroom. Over the years, he built a solid reputation for this work ethic and his even-temperedness, skills that are highly prized on the bench. Justice Dean frequently returns to the University of Windsor to teach law courses, speak on panel discussions and offers his support to Windsor Law campus clubs.
Moot objectives
The purpose of this Moot is to provide an opportunity for undergraduate students who may have an interest in becoming a lawyer or attending law school to participate in a beginner-friendly moot and practice their oral advocacy skills. Participants may also have the opportunity to network with law students, lawyers, legal practitioners and judges, and learn more about attending Windsor Law.
Details of the Moot
Modeled after the BLSA Canada Julius Isaac Alexander National Mooting Competition, the Dean Moot will focus on an area of law in which issues of equity and diversity arise, incorporating elements of critical race theory into the moot problem. The Moot is free of charge and is open to students who are enrolled in undergraduate programs at the University of Windsor and St. Clair College, both the Windsor and Chatham campuses.
There will be no written component of this Moot, the focus will be on oral submissions. Participants will compete in pairs of two presenting before a panel of judges. Generally, the facts will not be in dispute, but rather, on legal issues. Upper-year Windsor Law students will assist as moot coaches for each team. The preliminary rounds of the Moot will feature legal practitioners and law professors. The final round of the Moot will feature a panel of sitting judges, including Justice Dean.
