Master of Public Policy

The Department of Political Science has a unique joint initiative with the University of Michigan at Dearborn that allows students to earn two Masters degrees in two years from two countries. The joint initiative takes advantage of Windsor’s location on the border with the United States and its proximity to one of the United States’ most prestigious universities. The University of Michigan at Dearborn (UMD) is located less than twenty minutes from Windsor.

The joint initiative allows a student to gain advanced standing in UMD’s Master of Public Policy (M.P.P.) degree upon completion of the M.A. at Windsor. Instead of the standard 13 courses required for the M.P.P. degree, students will gain credit for six courses and require an additional seven graduate courses in order to complete the M.P.P. It is expected that it will be possible to complete these courses in three semesters, thus allowing students to gain two graduate degrees in two years.

Applying for the Joint Program

As of 2010-11, there is no separate application process for applicants interested in the joint initiative with the University of Michigan at Dearborn. Interested applicants should follow the application procedures for the MA in Political Science. They should include with this application the optional statement of intent and indicate in this statement that they are interested in applying for the joint initiative.

An acceptance by the University of Windsor to the joint initiative automatically allows the applicant to enter the University of Michigan at Dearborn for the M.P.P. degree upon completion of the M.A. at Windsor. Fees and visas

Upon completion of the M.A. (expected to be the September of the year following their entry to the M.A.) the applicant will cease to be a student of the University of Windsor and will become a student at the University of Michigan at Dearborn. Fees will be payable at the UMD and all administration of the M.P.P. will be dealt with through UMD. Under the terms of the joint initiative, Canadian and Permanent Resident students in the M.P.P. Program will pay ‘in-state’ tuition fees.

Students are responsible for securing and completing the necessary paperwork to gain entry into the United States. This component of the application process will not be dealt with by the University of Windsor.
