The core curriculum courses include:
- general statistical methodology
- theory and research methods
- ethical and professional issues in applied psychology
- historical and philosophical foundations of psychology
- one additional methods course
All students are required to take at least one course in cultural diversity and additional applied social psychology breadth courses from the two program streams (Community and Health Psychology; Industrial/Organizational Psychology).
Students must also complete a 100-hour MA level practicum and a 1000-hour PhD level internship.
Students are required to engage in research throughout their tenure in the Applied Social Psychology program.
All students who are admitted are guaranteed a faculty research supervisor, but a pre-arranged match between an applicant and a specific faculty research supervisor is not a condition for admission.
Students who are admitted to the program are encouraged to talk to graduate students and faculty in the department about research before choosing a supervisor.
The decision about a research supervisor should be made by the winter of their first year. Students are free to change supervisors later (typically after completion of the MA) should their research interests change.
This is an integrated M.A. / Ph.D. program designed to be completed in six years. Students are expected to complete their master’s degree in the first two years of study, but the master’s component of the program is not designed to stand alone. Students interested only in a master’s degree should apply elsewhere.
