Graduate Students
All graduate student research involving human subjects must go through the Research Ethics Board! It is advised that graduate students submit their ethics application after they have presented their proposal to their committee.
All graduate students are required to complete the Introductory Tutorial for the Tri-Council Policy Statement and submit their Certifcate of Completion with their application. The Certificate does not need to be submitted with subsequent applications.

Responsibilities of Supervisors of Student Research
The supervisor is ultimately responsible for the ethical conduct of research by his or her student.
The Graduate Calendar states: “If the research involves human ethics, the faculty supervisor is responsible for the conduct of the study, the ethical performance of the project, and the protection of the rights and welfare of human participants. With the signed approval of the faculty supervisor, the graduate student submits an application to the Research Ethics Board. Research involving human subjects, including secondary use of data, cannot begin until ethics clearance has been obtained.”
The supervisor should provide the student with applicable governmental and institutional requirements for the conduct of research with human subjects, such as the Research Ethics Board web site, University of Windsor Guidelines, etc.
The supervisor needs to review the ethics application for the student to ensure that the research is being conducted in according with the Tri-Council Policy Statement and policies of the University of Windsor.
Supervisors must ensure that their graduate students are registered in the course(s) and the term(s) during which they are doing research with human subjects. If a student withdraws from a course or term during which s/he is doing research with human subjects, and the student’s ethics application is still open and outstanding, then the supervisor must inform the Research Ethics Coordinator of the status of that student and her/his application as soon as possible.
If research is to be undertaken at another site, such as a hospital, school board, social agency, etc., it is the responsibility of the student and her/his supervisor to ensure that approval has been received from this site prior to the start of such research. This approval must be submitted to the Research Ethics Board in order for final clearance to be granted.
Both the student and supervisor are responsible for notifying the Research Ethics Coordinator of any changes in the supervisor of a specific project as soon as such information is known.
