Automated Wait List

Students can access an automated Wait List via UWinsite Student.

With the popularity of so many courses, the Wait List will allow students to place their name in a queue. Students will be contacted when space becomes available in that course. A Wait List is available for many courses, but not all (departmental/instructor preference; in cases where an interview, portfolio or other criteria exist; when instructor approval is required in order to register in the course, for example).

Students must satisfy any prerequisites or registration restrictions that might exist for that specific course before using the Wait List. Registration in some courses is restricted to “majors” in that discipline early in the registration cycle only to be opened up to “non-majors” at a later date. This process is designed to ensure that “majors” in that discipline or program have registration priority for the applicable courses to ensure they are able to complete the courses necessary to graduate.

Students may place themselves on a Wait List for a maximum of five courses at any one time. Students cannot place themselves on a Wait List unless that course is full or the places allocated for that category of students have all been filled.

Students cannot place themselves on a Wait List before their scheduled registration appointment time. Students are informed of their appointment time by email to their UW email address.

When a student is on a Wait List for a course and an opening occurs, the student will be sent an email indicating that the opening exists. In the early stages of the registration cycle, students will be given 48 hours to respond and register themselves into that course. After classes begin, students will be given 24 hours to respond. On the last day of the Add/Drop period, actual hours remaining will be available to the student to register into the course(s) in question. If a student does not register for the course within these time periods, their name will be dropped to the end of the Wait List for that course.

In exceptional circumstance, with the approval of the department/instructor, students can be signed into a course using the Add/Drop form but, for fairness to all students, it is anticipated that these instances will be rare.
