Safety Data Sheet (SDS)

Safety Data Sheets serve the same functon that Materila Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) does in WHMIS 1988. SDSs  provide the proper procedures for working with or handling a particular substance. They include information such as physical data (melting point, boiling point, flash point, etc.), toxicity, health effects, first aid, reactivity, storage, disposal, protective equipment and spill/leak procedures. This data is of particular use if a spill or other accident occurs.

SDSs must be easy accessible by all employees and students that work with or near the controlled product.

Electronic Format

For items not acquired by the CCC, paper copies can be scanned or electronic copies downloaded from suppliers and provided electronically through a computer to employees and students in the area where the controlled products are used or stored.

Paper Format

Paper copies must at all times be visible and accessible in the labs that do not have a computer.

Instructions on how to access the MSDS system

You are strongly encouraged to inspect SDSs before you begin your work with a chemical.  It is important to remember that whether the SDS is a paper or electronic copy, the product name and supplier on the SDS much match the material in use.
