Instructions for participants:
Each team has been given an identical box of materials. Your goal is to use these materials to create a craft that will sustain flight, for the longest time possible, when dropped or thrown from a balcony. You can only use the materials provided in the box.
Each team will be allowed six official timed flights. The winner of the event will be the craft that has the longest flight time between launch and landing. Your craft may be thrown, dropped, or otherwise propelled from the launching point by any member of the team. In the case of a tie the second best time (etc.) will be used.
Official rules:
-
The craft must weight at least 0.2g.
-
The craft must be constructed USING ONLY the materials provided to each group.
-
Each flying machine may be thrown/dropped/launched by a member of that team only
-
If a craft comes in contact with anything other than the floor the timer will stop. The group may then choose between accepting that time and trying the flight a second time.
-
If the craft becomes stuck in a location where from it cannot be safely retrieved the team may create a second craft from the remaining materials if time permits.
-
Each team will be allowed a total of 6 official timed flights.
-
If a team does not submit their unused materials and leave their work area clean they will have their best time disqualified. In order to ensure fair treatment a judge must sign each teams scorecard (and the main score chart) when they have completed all six runs and shown their work area to be clean. In the event of a disagreement about the ownership of a work area that is not clean, the judge will disqualify the best score of all teams involved.
-
If there is a discrepancy between the times recorded by the judges and the teams, the time used will be the one recorded by the judges.
