Clayton Smith, Ed.D. - Biography

Clayton Smith is Vice-Provost, Students and International at the University of Windsor, where he oversees the University's campus-wide internationalization efforts and serves as dean of students. Prior to becoming Vice-Provost, he held senior enrolment management positions at the State University of New York College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill, Tallahassee Community College in Florida and the University of Maine at Augusta. Previously, he held positions in public administration and policy analysis in Washington, D.C. and Maine.

Dr. Clayton SmithDr. Smith holds the Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in Political Science, from the University of Southern Maine, the Master of Arts degree, in Political Science, from Drew University, the Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Maine, and the Doctor of Education degree, in Higher Education, from Florida State University. Smith also completed the Senior University Administrators’ Course through the Centre for Higher Education Research & Development at the University of Manitoba.

Dr. Smith has received the University of Windsor Organization of Part-time University Students’ Friends of Students Award. He was also named Honorary Member of the University of Windsor Chapter of the Golden Key International Honor Society and now serves as faculty advisor for Golden Key's Windsor Chapter.

Active professionally throughout his career, Smith has served as president of the State University of New York College Admissions Professionals, and held numerous leadership positions with the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, the Florida Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, the New England Association of Collegiate Registrars and AdmissionOfficers, and the National Association of College Admission Counselors. He is also a member of the Canadian Association of College & University Student Services and the Canadian Bureau of Interantional Education. He currently serves on the College & University and Journal of Student Affairs Research & Practice editorial boards, and co-chairs the annual Canadian SEM Summit.

Dr. Smith is a frequent national and international presenter on strategic enrolment management, student engagement and student affairs topics. He has consulted at a wide range of post-secondary educational institutions in Canada, the U.S., and Egypt.

Active in the community, Smith served as co-chair of the Pakistani Canadian Windsor Association Flood Reief Fund Committee.and the Pakistani Canadian Windsor Association Earthquake Fund Relief Committee.  He has also served with Liberty Partnerships Advisory Committee, the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce, Gardiner Rotary Club, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Kennebec Valley, and as president of the Gardiner Area Federal Credit Union.

Comparative enrolment management is the current focus of Dr.Smith’s research. Working with a colleague in Western Canada, he has led a conversation in both Canada and the U.S. on the relative distinctive qualities of enrolment management in both countries and emphasized how enrolment managers on both sides of the border can learn from each other. He also manages a Web site (www.uwindsor.ca/sem) that serves as a resource library on strategic enrolment management for Canadians.
