Year in Review

Aboriginal Education Centre

  • Strengthened focus on Aboriginal recruitment efforts through a mentoring program with the local Boards of Education, and the development of an Aboriginal Outreach Coordinator position

Academic Integrity Office*

  • Presented our Academic Integrity Digital Case Stories, featuring 4 UW faculty members, at the 2011 CACUSS conference and the 2011 International Center for Academic Integrity ("ICAI") conference (with Ryerson University).
  • Presented at the 2011 ICAI conference on the Academic Integrity Council of Ontario and the creation of a regional academic integrity consortium (with partners at Queens, Brock, and Ryerson).
  • Distributed Academic Integrity Office pens to students and groups (and still have many more to share!)
  • Published the new AIO awareness campaign poster, "CHOICES", which was distributed not just across campus but also, upon erquest, to other post-secondary institutions and our two local school boards (128 copies to be posted in Essex County elementary and secondary schools).
  • Published the sixth annual Comprehensive Student Discipline Report.
  • Conducted 84% more investigations than in the previous year.
  • Conducted the 2011 Academic Integrity Assessment Survey (for students and faculty).  Results will be published in the forthcoming year.
  • The Academic Integrity external review was completed, resulting in a number of recommendations for improving academic integrity and judicial affairs procedures, many of which have been implemented or will be implemented in the near future. 

Advising Centre

  • Enhanced the student experience through provision of support for over 4700 students, clarifying information requests, assisting with the development of academic plans/educational goals, solving registration problems, and listening and providing solutions for "personal issues" that intersect with academic performance

Campus Community Police*

  • In July took on a new Director of Campus Community Police
  • Completed the move into the new temporary location at 478 Sunset Avenue as we await the construction of a new CCP office in the Parking Innovation Centre
  • Took on the role of preceptor for two 4th year nursing students who work at promoting our Alcohol Education Program with our student Alcohol Education Coordinator
  • Awarded the MTIA (Microsoft Technology Innovation Award) for our project entitled "A Team Appraoch to Security and Emergency Management" under our Emergency Preparedness Program
  • The UWERT (Emergency Response Team) placed 3rd in a 33 team competition held at the National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation conference in Baltimore measuring medical, communication and trauma response
  • In March, S/Cst Rose Briscoe to be the recipient of the 2012 OPUS Disability Campus Community Recognition Award for her demonstrated guidance and leadership in advancing accommodations and accessibility for students

Centre for Career Education*

  • Forged a new partnership with Workforce WindsorEssex which yielded several workshops for students on emerging sectors in the region, consulting on programming and a Working in Windsor-Essex Career Fair.
  • A campus research team that included the Centre for Career Education published an article entitled "Development of Learning Outcomes Assessment Methods for Cooperative Education Programs" in the Journal of Co-operative Education and Internships.
  • The Centre for Career Education is one of several university "career centres" that developed and launched a resource titled "Career Centre Evaluation:  A Practitioner's Guide".
  • The 2012 Job Fair was a success with an increase in the number of University of Windsor participants.

Centre for English Language Development*

  • Two students from Japan have been selected to participate in ELIP through the Hope for Youth project.  Languages Canada has coordinated this scholarship program with the Embassy of Canada in Tokyo to support Japanese youth who were affected by the Greater Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.  The students are expected to arrive next term.

Educational Development Centre*

  • The Educational Development Centre, Student Disability Services, the Student Counselling Centre and Residence Services is proud of their contributions to Mental Health Awareness Week 2012, which provided the campus community with many events and programming throughout the week that promoted mental health awareness and information.  The highlight of the week was a performance by Stephen Page (formerly of the Barenaked Ladies) whose inspiring message touched many who heard him speak about his own personal struggles with mental illness.  A suice prevention training workshop, guest speakers, a panel discussion and 2 theatrical performances also contributed to creating an increased awareness about mental health issues.

International Student Centre*

  • International Student Centre moved to brand new facilities on the 2nd Floor of Laurier Hall 
  • Expanded programming due to multi-purpose space in new location (i.e. tax clinics, STEPS, Connecting4Success, etc.)
  • Ability to facilitate student social activities in multi-purpose space
  • Strategic cooperation/partnerships with other offices and community at large
  • Student Exchange had its third straight year of growth in University of Windsor students participating in exchange programs
  • UWindsor welcomed students for the first time from 2 new exchange partners - University of Lucerne (Switzerland) and University of Cassino (Italy)
  • Uwindsor students travelled for the first time to two exchange partners - one to China via the Ontario Jiangsu Program, and one to the University of the West Indies-Mona Campus (Jamaica)

Residence Services*

  • Completed $815,000 in renovations to upgrade washrooms in Laurier Hall and improve outside lighting around the residence buildings
  • Partnered with the International Student Centre on the completion of the new ISC in Laurier Hall
  • Increased residence applications and assignments from 2010-2011, achieving 99% of budget target in September 2011
  • Hosted annual "Boo at the U" Halloween event where residence students host Faculty and Staff and their families
  • Windsor Inter-Residence Council won the bid to host the Great Lakes Affiliates of College and University Residence Halls (GLACURH) to be held in November 2012, the first time in Canada in 20 years.
  • Hosted successful academic reception honouring residence students who achieved a cumulative average of 11.0 (A-) in the fall of 2011, an increase from 2010.

Student Counselling Centre*

  • Provided QPR Suicide Prevention Training to over 100 faculty, staff and students.
  • This year the Student Counselling Centre ran four groups - Anger Management, Assertiveness, Mood group for anxiety and depression, and Mind-Body group which included a yogo component.
Office of the Vice-Provost, Students and International*
  • Held Summer Retreat on "Developing an Enhanced Sense of Community"
  • Hosted the annual Student & Academic Services Staff Recognition Luncheon to announce the 2011 Going the Extra Mile (GEM) awards
  • Visits to to China to foster international relationships
  • Hosted the "Dean's Trip" to Wilfred Laurier University
