ADVANCING THE RIGHTS OF FEMALE MIGRANTS: Case Studies of Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic

About the Project
 
The International Development Research Centre has provided a research grant to bring together researchers from six countries to examine migration within Latin America and Caribbean. This project examines ways of advancing the rights of female migrants. The research will include case studies from Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Many of the participants in this project also presented at the Citizenship, Identity, and Social Justice conference which the Centre hosted in May.

The major goals of this study are to: 1) make a contribution to our understanding of processes that inhibit or advance the social and economic integration of female migrants into the host society; and 2) identify specific forms of migrant rights advocacy and migrant rights struggles (strategies and discourses), in the context of effective international protection mechanisms, that are most conducive to improving the rights of female migrants.

Acerca del Proyecto

El Centro Internacional de Investigaciones para el Desarrollo ha otorgado un fondo de investigación para reunir a investigadores de seis países con el objeto de estudiar la migración dentro de Latinoamérica y El Caribe. Este proyecto estudiará las formas de promover los derechos de las mujeres migrantes. La investigación incluirá los casos de estudio de Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica, México y la República Dominicana. Varios de los participantes en este proyecto presentaron su trabajo en la conferencia Ciudadanía, Identidad, y Justicia Social, que fue auspiciada por el Centro el pasado mes de Mayo.

Los principales objetivos de este estudio son: 1) contribuir a nuestro conocimiento de los procesos que inhiben y promueven la integración social y económica de las mujeres migrantes en las sociedades de llegada; y 2) identificar formas específicas de defensoría de los derechos de los migrantes y de sus luchas por la obtención de derechos (estrategias y discursos), en el contexto de mecanismos internacionales efectivos que sean los más conducentes a mejorar los derechos de las mujeres migrantes.
