Welcome to Field Education

The Council on Social Work Education in its Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards stipulates:

“Field education is an integral component of social work education anchored in the mission, goals, and educational level of the program. It occurs in settings that reinforce students’ identification with the purposes, values and ethics of the profession; fosters the integration of empirical and practice-based knowledge; and, promotes the development of professional competence. Field education is systematically designed, supervised, coordinated, and evaluated on the basis by which students demonstrate the achievement of program objectives.”

Field Education is a requirement of the Social Work Program at the University of Windsor and successful completion of two field placements is required for graduation. The Field Program provides experiential educational opportunities directed toward the development of values, knowledge and skills required for generalist social work practice.

All students are assigned a field placement in a human service organization or community setting for 2 days per week in both the Fall and Winter semesters.

Students complete their first field placement (Placement I Objectives) on Mondays and Wednesdays from September to April.

Students complete their second field placement (Placement II Objectives) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from September to April.

In the Field Education Program there are seven educational objectives addressed within four areas of practice:

  • Organizational context of practice,
  • Community context of practice,
  • Social work skills context of practice; and
  • Professional context of practice.
