Alan Hall has three distinct areas of research interest. One is the study of agri-environmental practices and policies in Canada with an emphasis on understanding the development of sustainable agriculture and organic farming. Dr.Hall is one of few sociologists in Canada concentrating on these important areas of environmental issues and his work has made an important contribution to an understanding of the limits and origins of recent changes in agricultural practices relevant to the environment.
A second concentration is research on the relationship between the state and labour unions in Canada examined broadly from a regulation perspective. His current research with a colleague Dr. Willem de Lint, is examining recent developments in the policing of labour strikes and protests. The principal interest is documenting and explaining a shift towards declining police involvement and changes in the methods of intervention.
A final key area of interest is occupational health and safety. At the moment, he is working with Drs. Anne Forrest and Alan Sears on a study of the politics of health and safety within auto parts plants in the Windsor area. Here the focus is on linking changes in the organization of work and technology to different forms and outcomes of workplace politics aimed at addressing health and safety issues. Dr. Hall’s major areas of teaching are the sociology of law and work, and corporate crime.
