Anthropology Degree Programs

We offer the following programs in Anthropology: a General degree, an Honours degree, a Combined Honours degree and a Minor. Note that all Anthropology courses have a “49" prefix (e.g., 49-111).


The General Degree is a three year degree (30 courses).


Twelve Anthropology courses are required, including 49-111, 49-112 and 10 additional Anthropology courses (at least 4 of these courses must be at or above the 300 level, and 4 courses at the 200 level). For other university requirements for the degree, see the University Calendar.


The Honours Degree in Anthropology is a four year degree (40 courses).


Sixteen Anthropology courses are required, including 49-111, 49-112, 49-213, 49-355, 49-356, and 49-415; two additional 200-level Anthropology courses;  three additional 300-level Anthropology courses; 6 additional Anthopology courses; 2 of 48/49-240; 48/49-241; 48/49-333/49-352 and two more of any Anthropology courses plus 02-250. A Combined Honours Degree is an Honours Degree in Anthropology which is combined with a specialization in another subject (e.g., History, English, Political Science, etc.).


Forty courses are taken with requirements in Anthropology and the other subject. In Anthropology, the requirements are 16 courses , including 49-111, 49-112, 49-213, 49-355, 49-356, and 49-415; plus three Anthropology courses at the 200 level; plus five Anthropology courses at the 300 level; plus any two additional courses in Anthropology; plus 02-250. The requirements in the other subject is prescribed by that area of study. Students should consult the other department for requirements for a Combined Honours Degree.


A Minor in Anthropology can be combined with a Major in another area of study. Students wishing to do a Minor in Anthropology are required to take 49-111, 49-112; one 200 level Anthropology course, and three other Anthropology courses at the 3rd year or above.


Note: Anthropology students interested in entering the M.A. program in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology must take 02-250, 48-302, 48-308, 49-415, and one fourth year theory course in Sociology (i.e., one course from the 48-403 to 48-408 sequence).
