Anthropology Recommended Course Sequences

Below is a recommended, not required, sequence for each year of a General degree, Honours degree, and Combined Honours degree, and last a Minor in Anthropology. Generally speaking, beyond the required courses for each Anthropology program, there is considerable flexibility for students to take courses in other subjects. Students are encouraged to take a semester or year of study abroad and receive equivalent credit. Please note that the courses listed below are not necessarily taught every year.
 

General Degree

Year One: 49-111, 49-112, 48-101, 48-102; 4 first year courses in other departments, such as Classical Studies (11-160, 11-161, 11-162), English (26-100, 26-128), History (43-101, 43-102, 43-123, 43-124), Labour Studies (54-105), Philosophy (34-130, 34-129), Political Science (45-130, 45-160, 45-170), Visual Arts (28-150), or Women’s Studies (53-100); an Arts or Language course; a Science course.

Year Two: 49-213, one of 49-215 or 49-217; two of 49-214, 49-220, 49-226, 49-232, 49-233, 49-240, 49-241; an Arts or Language course; a science course; four other second year courses outside of the Department.

Year Three: Six of 49-306, 49-317, 49-319, 49-323, 49-325, 49-330, 49-331, 49-333, 49-336, 49-338, 49-340, 49-352, 49-354, 49-355, 49-356, 49-375, 49-380, 49-382; four third year courses outside the Department.
 

Honours Degree

Year One: 49-111, 49-112, 48-101, 48-102; 4 first year courses in other departments, such as Classical Studies (11-160, 11-161, 11-162), English (26-100, 26-128), History (43-101, 43-102, 43-123, 43-124), Labour Studies (54-105), Philosophy (34-130, 34-129), Political Science (45-130, 45-160, 45-170), Visual Arts (28-150), or Women’s Studies (53-100); an Arts or Language course; a Science course.

Year Two: 49-213; one of 49-215 or 49-217; 02-250; two of 49-214, 49-220, 49-226, 49-232, 49-233, 49-240, 49-241; an Arts or Language course; a science course; three other second year courses outside of the Department.

Year Three: 49-355, 49-356; four of 49-306, 49-317, 49-318, 49-323, 49-325, 49-330, 49-331, 49-333, 49-336, 49-338, 49-340, 49-352, 49-354, 49-375, 49-380, 49-382; two Sociology courses not cross-listed with Anthropology; two third year courses outside the Department.

Year Four: 49-415, two of 49-406, 49-410, 49-411, 49-419, 49-447; three other courses in Anthropology; 4 other courses from any area of study, at least one of which must be outside the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. 
 

Combined Honours Degree

Year One: 49-111, 49-112, 48-101, 48-102; 4 first year requirements from the other subject area; an Arts or Language course; a Science course.

Year Two: 49-213; one of 49-215 or 49-217; 02-250; one of 49-214, 49-220, 49-226, 49-232, 49-233, 49-240, 49-241; an Arts or Language course; a Science course; 4 second year requirements from the other subject area.

Year Three: 49-355, 49-356, three of 49-306, 49-317, 49-318, 49-323, 49-325, 49-330, 49-331, 49-333, 49-336, 49-338, 49-340, 49-352, 49-354, 49-375, 49-380, 49-382; 5 third year requirements from the other subject area.

Year Four: 49-415, four other courses in Anthropology, two of which must be at the 300 level; 5 fourth year requirements of the other subject area.
 

Minor in Anthropology

A Minor in Anthropology is combined with a Major in another area of study. Students wishing to do a Minor in Anthropology are required to take 49-111, 49-112; one 200 level Anthropology course, and three other Anthropology courses at the 3rd year or above.
