
Below is a recommended, not required, sequence for each year of a General degree, Honours degree, and Combined Honours degree, and last a Minor in Family and Social Relations. Generally speaking, beyond the required courses for each Family and Social Relations program, there is considerable flexibility for students to take courses in other subjects. Please note that the courses listed below are not necessarily taught every year.
Year One: 46-115, 46-116 that are Psychology courses, 48-101, and 48-102 that are Sociology courses; two courses from any area excluding Social Sciences; one course from Science; one course from Arts and Languages; and one course from any area of study including Social Sciences such as Classical Studies (11-160, 11-161, or 11-162), English (26-100 or 26-128), History (43-101, 43-102, 43-123, or 43-124), Labour Studies (54-105), Anthropology (49-111), Philosophy (34-130, 34-129), Political Science (45-130, 45-160, or 45-170), Visual Arts (28-150), or Women’s Studies (53-100, 53-106, or 53-120).
Year Two: 02-250 (or equivalent) an introductory Statistics course; 48-210 a Sociology Research course; one course selected from 43-249, 43-250, 43-335 that are History courses, or 48-351 a Sociology course; two courses from any area excluding Social Sciences; one course from Science; one course from Arts and Languages; and three courses from any area of study including Social Sciences.
Year Three: six courses selected from 46-223, 46-224, 46-240 that are Psychology courses, 47-117, 47-118 that are Social Work courses, 48-204, 48-205,48-206, 48-306 (or 49-306), 48-329, 48-354, 48-409, or 48-461 that are Sociology courses; two courses selected from 41-110 an Economics course, 46-225, 46-322, 47-204, 47-210, 48-226 (or 49-226), 48-251, or 49-214 an Anthropology course; two courses from any area of study including Social Sciences.
Year One: 02-250 (or equivalent) an introductory Statistics course, 46-115, 46-116 that are Psychology courses, 48-101, 48-102 and 48-104 that are Sociology courses; one course from Science; one course from Arts and Languages; one course from any area excluding Social Sciences; and one course from any area of study including Social Sciences such as Classical Studies (11-160, 11-161, or 11-162), English (26-100 or 26-128), History (43-101, 43-102, 43-123, or 43-124), Labour Studies (54-105), Anthropology (49-111), Philosophy (34-130, 34-129), Political Science (45-130, 45-160, or 45-170), Visual Arts (28-150), or Women’s Studies (53-100, 53-106, or 53-120).
Year Two: 46-223, 46-224 that are Psychology courses, 48-204, 48-205, 48-206, 48-210 (or equivalent) that are Sociology courses; one course from Science; one course from Arts and Languages; one course from any area excluding Social Sciences; and one course from any area of study including Social Sciences.
Year Three: 46-327, 48-329; one of either 46-313 or 48-308; one of either 46-240 or 48-306 (or 49-306 Anthropology course); one of either 48-310 (or 49-355) or 48-416; one course selected from 46-225, 47-117, 47-118, 48-354, and 49-214; one course selected from 41-110, 46-322, 46-323, 47-204, 47-210, 48-226 (or 49-226), 48-251, 48-352 (or 49-352), and 49-214; one course from any area excluding Social Sciences; and one course from any area of study including Social Sciences.
Year Four: two courses selected from 46-225, 47-117, 47-118, 48-354, and 49-214; three courses selected from 41-110, 46-322, 46-323, 47-204, 47-210, 48-226 (or 49-226), 48-251, 48-352 (or 49-352), and 49-214; two courses selected from 43-463, 46-423, 46-424, 46-440, 46-463, 48-409, 48-461, and 48-496; one selected from 43-249, 43-250, 43-335, and 48-351; one course from any area excluding Social Sciences; and one course from any area of study including Social Sciences.
Combined Honours Family and Social Relations Degree
Year One: 46-115, 46-116 that are Psychology courses, 48-101, and 48-102 that are Sociology courses; three first year required courses from other subject area; one course from Science; one course from Arts and Languages.
Year Two: 48-210 (or equivalent) a Sociology Research course, 02-250 (or equivalent) an introductory Statistics course; two courses selected from 46-223, 46-224 and 46-327; two courses selected from 48-204, 48-205, 48-206, 48-251, and 49-214; three first year required courses from other subject area; one course from Science.
Year Three: 48-306 (or 46-240), 48-308 (or 46-313, or equivalent); one selected from 48-351, 48-352, and 48-354; six second or third year required courses from other subject area; one course from Arts and Languages.
Year Four: one selected from either 48-310 (or 49-355) or 48-416; one selected from 43-463 (or 46-463), 46-423, 46-424, 48-409, 48-461, and 48-496; eight 200, 300 or 400 level courses required from the other subject area or/and additional courses from any area of study excluding Social Sciences as required.
Minor in Family and Social Relations
All courses required are in the Sociology Department: 48-204, 48-206, 48-306, 48-329; and one course selected from 48-352, 48-409, and 48-461. Introductory Sociology courses must be taken in order to take level 200 courses. For example, 48-204 requires 48-101 and either 48-102 or 49-112.
