This award is given to a graduating student with the highest undergraduate academic standing in each years graduating class.
Alissa Mazar is looking forward to a career in academia and she’s committed to the idea that her work there can help change the world for the better. “Theory without practice is futile,” said the recipient of the 2009 Governor General’s Silver Medal for achieving the highest academic standing in her graduating class. “I want to be able to combine academics with activism.”

Alissa Anne Mazar Mazar received an honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and English at Thursday’s convocation. She graduates with a 12.35 grade point average in each of her majors. Out of 40 courses, she earned an A or better in 39 of them, all while being named most valuable player of the Lancer women’s varsity soccer team.

She will pursue a master’s degree in Sociology on a full scholarship this fall at the University of Western Ontario and would eventually like to complete a doctorate. Mazar is interested in matters of social justice—particularly concerning women’s issues and labour—and wants to focus her studies on how neo-liberal economic restructuring is changing Latin America from a feminist perspective.

She said she credits much of her success to sociology assistant professor Kendra Coulter, who inspired her to pursue greater academic heights.“She’s just very passionate,” Mazar said. “She has a great deal of passion for her subject matter and her teaching methods are incredible

Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology students participate in Canada World Youth Student Exchange.

Three of our students are currently part of a pilot project student exchange in Ecuador. The University of Windsor, in collaboration with Canada World Youth, has supported students to participate in an exchange this South American country. Students are being housed with local families for two months and given a job placement so that they can learn about cultural diversity and development issues.

One of our students, Jocelyn Nikita, explains why she is participating in this project:

"I've had opportunities to travel in the past, but I've not been given the opportunity to stay long enough to appreciate a culture or another way of life. I love challenges and I think this will be one of the greatest I have pursued. At 19 years of age I have the maturity as well as the flexibility to take advantage of an opportunity such as this. Therefore I expect that while I am there and when I return I will be more accomplished, diverse, adaptable and appreciative. I look forward to mastering conversational Spanish and making some friendships along the way. I do not only see this experience as an opporunity to help others but to help myself as well, as I will be challenged every step of the way. I think life is about taking challenges and surpassing them. This experience is what will allow me to do so."
