Sociology Degree Programs

We offer the following programs in Sociology: a General degree, Honours degree, Combined Honours degree, Combined Honours Sociology and Criminology and three types of Minors. Note that all Sociology courses have a “48-“ prefix (e.g., 48-101).

The General Degree is a three year degree that requires a total of thirty courses.

Ten Sociology courses are required including 48-101, 48-102, 48-210, 48-302 and 48-310 (or 49-355), and three additional Sociology courses at the 300 or 400 level and an Anthropology introductory course of 49-112. For other university requirements for the degree, refer to the University Calendar.

The Honours Degree in Sociology is a four year program that requires a total of forty courses.

Nineteen courses are required including 48-101, 48-102, 48-202, 48-210, 48-302, 48-308, and 48­-310 (or 49-355), two 400 level courses including one from 48-403, 48-404, 48-405, 48-408, 48-415 (or 49-415), two additional Sociology courses at the 300 or 400 level, plus 49-112 and one other Anthropology course which is not cross-listed with Sociology. A Combined Honours Degree is an Honours Degree in Sociology that is combined with a specialization in another subject (e.g., Anthropology, History, English, Political Science, etc.).

The Combined Honours Degree is a four year program that requires a total of forty courses, fifteen of these courses from Sociology and the remainder in the other subject and optional requirements. In Sociology, major requirements include courses 48-101, 48-102, 48-202, 48-210, 48-302, 48-308, 48-310 (or 49-355), and two 400 level courses including one from 48-403, 48-404, 48-405, 48-408, 48-415 (or 49-415) and 49-112 from Anthropology. Two additional Sociology courses from 300 or 400 level courses. An introductory statistics course (02-250 or the equivalent) is required. An equivalent statistics course may be substituted for 48-308 in which case one additional Sociology or Anthropology course is required. The major requirements in the other subject is prescribed by that area of study. Students should consult the other department for requirements for a Combined Honours Degree.

The Combined Honours Sociology and Criminology is a four year program with a total of forty courses in which nineteen are required from Sociology (48-) 48-101, 48-102, 48-202, 48-207, 48-210, 48-260, 48-261, 48-262, 48-302, 48-308, 48-310 (or 49-355), and 48-363, plus two 400 level courses, including one of 48-403, 48-404, 48-405, 48-408, 48-415 (or 49-415) and 49-112 from Anthropology. Three 300 level courses from selected Sociology courses that include 48-361, 48-362, 48-367, 48-368, 48-369, 48-370, 48-371 and 49-323 from Anthropology. One 400 level course from selected Sociology courses that include 48-410, 48-460, 48-461, 48-464, 48-465, and 48-466. Other requirements are an introductory statistics course (02-250), and one introductory Philosophy course selected from either 34-129 or 34-226. Other requirements are listed as follows; two courses from Arts and Languages; two courses from Science; eight courses from Arts, Languages, or Social Sciences, including Sociology; and seven courses from any area of study, excluding Sociology and any Anthropology courses which are cross-listed with Sociology.

Admission requirements and application procedures for entry to the third year of the combined Sociology and Criminology Honours Program are as described for the Criminology Honours Degree.

A Minor in Sociology can be combined with a Major in another area of study. Three Minors are offered in the Sociology Department.

Students wishing to do a Minor in Latin American Studies are required to take six courses, including two from 30-261, 43-272, 48-330 (or 49-330) plus two courses form 23-331, 43-217, 43-462, 48-226 (or 49-226), 48-227, 48-232 (or 49-232), 48-352 (or 49-352), 48-411 (or 49-411), and 23-100 and 23-101 or two higher courses in Spanish Languages.

Students wishing to do a Minor in Sociology are required to take six Sociology courses, including 48-101, 48-102 and four courses at the 200 level or above.
Students wishing to do a Minor in Studies of Sexuality are required to take six courses from 48-205, 53-215, 53-200, 46-240, 48-351, 43-463 (or 46-463).

Note: Sociology students interested in entering the M.A. program in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology must take 02-250, 48-302, 48-308, 49-415, and one 400 level theory course in Sociology (e.g., one course from the 48-403 to 48-408 sequence).
